Summary: Someone has called your character(s) Mary-Sue, but they never told you how your characters are one. Let me guess: you looked up what Mary-Sues are and found a multitude of various conflicting definitions, and none of them seemed to match your accused character, except the definition that accuses all Original Characters in fan fiction, especially when they are paired with Canon Characters. Well, here's a different and refreshing opinion of what Mary-Sues are, and whether or not that term is as valid as people make it seem.

Story Notes:
I started writing these in 2009 or 2010 solely because I hated what other people were claiming Mary-Sues to be. OH, she's beautiful? She's got to be a Mary-Sue! OH, he has all of these superpowers? He's definitely a god-mod Gary-Stu! It's all stupid, so I made my own definition, and I am quite satisfied with what I've come up with so far. This is the first part of ten in my Mary-Sue: Who is She? series. That's right, TEN!

This is my personal definition of Mary-Sues are. I may have been called the Mary-Sue Guru on Lunaescence (by Rouge), but I in no way claim to be an expert. I'm sharing this to encourage you to write your own set of rules of what Mary-Sues are and what they are not. I also encourage you to defend your creations if you truly don't believe that your characters or stories aren't Mary-Sues and you can back it up.
